How to Keep Your Dog Cool During the Summer Months

How to Keep Your Dog Cool During the Summer Months

Summer is a wonderful time for outdoor adventures, family vacations, and longer days—but for our dogs, the rising temperatures can quickly become dangerous. Dogs don't sweat like people do. Instead, they rely mostly on panting and releasing heat through their paw pads, making them much more vulnerable to overheating.

At Tender Loving Animal Care, we've cared for pets through many Central California summers, and we've seen firsthand how important it is to take extra precautions when temperatures climb. Here are our top tips to help your furry family member stay safe, happy, and cool all summer long.

1. Always Provide Fresh, Cool Water

Hydration is your dog's first defense against the heat.

  • Refill water bowls frequently.

  • Keep multiple water stations inside and outside.

  • Add ice cubes on especially hot days.

  • Bring water and a portable bowl whenever you're away from home.

A hydrated dog is much better equipped to regulate body temperature.

2. Walk During the Coolest Parts of the Day

Midday temperatures can be dangerous—even if it doesn't feel unbearable to you.

The best times for walks are:

  • Early morning

  • After sunset

  • Late evening

Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest hours of the day. Shorter, slower walks are much safer.

3. Protect Their Paws

Sidewalks and asphalt can become extremely hot in the summer sun.

A simple test:Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

Choose grassy paths whenever possible or invest in protective dog booties if walking on hot surfaces is unavoidable.

4. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car

Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a vehicle can become deadly within minutes.

On an 85°F day, the inside of a parked car can exceed 100°F very quickly. Heatstroke can happen faster than many pet owners realize.

If your dog can't go inside with you, it's safest to leave them at home.

5. Create Cool Resting Areas

Help your dog escape the heat by providing:

  • Air conditioning or fans

  • Cooling mats

  • Shade outdoors

  • Damp towels for lying on

  • Plenty of airflow

Remember that shade moves throughout the day, so check outdoor areas regularly.

6. Offer Frozen Treats

Frozen snacks can be both refreshing and fun.

Try freezing:

  • Low-sodium chicken broth

  • Plain yogurt (if your dog tolerates dairy)

  • Watermelon (seedless)

  • Blueberries

  • Carrots

  • Dog-safe frozen treats

Always introduce new foods in moderation.

7. Watch for Signs of Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a medical emergency.

Watch for:

  • Heavy panting

  • Excessive drooling

  • Bright red gums

  • Vomiting

  • Weakness

  • Staggering

  • Confusion

  • Collapse

If you notice these symptoms, move your dog to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of water, cool them with damp towels (not ice water), and contact your veterinarian right away.

8. Groom for Comfort

Regular brushing removes excess undercoat and helps air circulate through your dog's coat.

For many double-coated breeds, shaving is not recommended because the coat actually helps insulate them from both heat and sunburn. Talk with your groomer or veterinarian about the best summer grooming plan for your dog's breed.

9. Keep Playtime Safe

Your dog still needs exercise and mental stimulation during summer.

Try:

  • Indoor games

  • Puzzle toys

  • Training sessions

  • Backyard play in the early morning

  • Sprinklers or kiddie pools (if your dog enjoys water)

Adjust activity based on the temperature and your dog's age, breed, and health.

10. Let a Professional Pet Sitter Help

If you're away during the day or on vacation, a professional pet sitter can help ensure your dog stays comfortable.

At Tender Loving Animal Care, we provide:

  • Fresh water at every visit

  • Potty breaks during cooler parts of the day

  • Indoor comfort checks

  • Personalized care based on your dog's needs

  • Plenty of love, attention, and companionship

Knowing someone is checking on your pet can give you peace of mind when temperatures soar.

Final Thoughts

Summer should be filled with tail wags—not trips to the emergency vet. By keeping your dog hydrated, avoiding the hottest part of the day, protecting their paws, and recognizing the early signs of heat-related illness, you can help your best friend enjoy the season safely.

Because at Tender Loving Animal Care, we believe they're not just pets—they're family.
